Emerging Leaders Seminar
This intensive, four-day program will bring 25 young leaders to the Boston area, immersing them in Adams’ family history, historical site visits, and civic seminar sessions. By bringing participants from their homes to the East Coast and the places where the first sparks of revolution started, participants will understand the importance of John Adams in the creation American Democracy and reinvigorate their passions for community leadership.
Dive into the history of America’s founding to help develop your personalized definitions of good citizenship and draw inspiration for how to live as responsible citizens. With a solid foundation in 5 pivotal moments of Adams’ public service, participants will better understand different forms that civic engagement can take today.
Come together to tackle questions like:
- How do people balance civic service and personal sacrifice?
- What are the leading principles and values guiding our ideas of good governments and what they do?
- What principles guide your thinking about the issues you care about? And how do you act on them?
- How can people in the United States be civic friends across divergent views of principles and values?
- What matters to me and why? How can I make what matters to me be about more than myself?
The biggest impact this program will have on me is how relevant Adams' revolutionary ideas are in todays world. Obviously Adams' was well ahead of his time in terms of his writing, but almost everything he wrote down can still be connected to our world in some way today.
Studying John Adams and the founding generation was a reminder that progress is rarely simple and that meaningful change often comes through perseverance, difficult conversations, and a willingness to remain committed even when the path forward is uncertain.
I believe I will carry this program with me by being more intentional in how I approach my work and relationships; asking better questions, seeking to understand different viewpoints, and remembering that the small actions we take every day contribute to something much larger over time.
The program also enabled me to think about the characteristics of my own leadership and the areas that I want to continue developing. I specifically am taking away the importance of vision as a leader, and how it can apply to my own work.
These past few days, I've recommitted myself to fulfilling my civic duty. That's a vague term, but this seminar helped me connect it to my education, my faith, and other aspects of my life.
